Is drinking alcoholic beverages healthy or unhealthy?

That’s been a question that has been asked, argued and studied for several decades.

There is no debate about drinking too much alcohol especially on a regular basis as it does lead to liver disease and heart disease and a number of other chronic and deadly health conditions.

Some studies report that drinking any amount of alcoholic beverages is unhealthy and poses a health risk. Some doctors will tell their patients to stop drinking regardless of their condition or of studies. Sometimes the ban on drinking alcohol is base more upon religious convictions (not always right) than on actual studies.

Then you will read reports that claim that moderate to occasional drinking of alcoholic beverages can be healthy. A number of doctors will recommend wine to their patients. My mother-in-law was told by her doctor to drink a glass of hearty red wine (like red port or port) every day because it would help her heart and she died less than 2 months from her 90th birthday. My dad’s doctor told him the same thing and he lived to be 92.

My own doctor has told me to drink a glass of red hearty wine every day, but not for my heart but to help my cholesterol. I don’t have high cholesterol, but I do have low GOOD cholesterol and drinking red wine has been reported to help improve good cholesterol, as does eating oats or oatmeal.

The debate raging now is not about whether any consumption of alcohol is good or bad, but who is behind some of the research and how much can you trust the research as reported:

“There’s ongoing debate over whether any benefits of drinking in moderation outweigh the known risks. To find out for sure— a new, ten-year $100 million dollar government study began signing up test subjects last January. The Moderate Alcohol and Cardiovascular Health trial was sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the government’s National Institutes of Health, NIH. If the results came out right—it could mean champagne corks popping inside the alcohol industry with big dividends. Moderate drinking could even be promoted as part of a heart healthy diet! That’s where the whole project went off the rails, according to Dr. Michael Carome at the watchdog Public Citizen.”

“Dr. Michael Carome: It turns out that the alcohol industry, five of the largest alcohol beverage producers are funding the majority of the study. They’re spending nearly $70-million dollars in this study. And it is a direct violation of an NIH policy that prohibits such solicitation of gifts or money from industry.”

“NIH added $30 million tax dollars to the study, too. But we examined insider emails suggesting the whole project was secretly designed to be little more than free advertising for industries selling beer, wine and spirits.”

“Carome: It seems that this study is more interested in serving as a marketing tool for the alcohol industry rather than answering important scientific questions that need to be answered and will advance the health of, the population in the US.”

Sadly, these types of things have been happening for years and it does make it difficult for anyone to know what studies can be trusted and what ones can’t.

I know that some years ago, before the influx of fast foods, I saw reports that showed that some of the lowest incidences of heart disease was found in certain regions of Italy and France. It was attributed largely to their diets of vegetables, combined with lots of olive oil and moderate drinking of wine, along with a hard-working lifestyle, but it did point out that the olive oil and wine played a major role in the lower rates of heart disease.

Believe it or not is up to you. All I can say is that be diligent and discerning in all areas of your life, including drinking alcohol.
