As reported by BBC News, agencies in the US and the UK hacked into multiple Israeli aircraft to gather intelligence during an operation in the 1990s. This news certainly won’t help the worsening relationship between Israel and the United States…

The Intercept and Der Spiegel both reported that this ‘spying’ operation allowed Israel’s allies to observe info acquired by reconnaissance missions. According to The Intercept, this intelligence was leaked by United States whistleblower Edward Snowden.

One minister remarked that this news is disappointing, but not surprising. “We know that the Americans spy on every country in the world and on us as well, on their friends,” says cabinet minister Yuval Steinitz. He added that Israel quit spying on the United States decades ago.

According to reports, US intelligence agencies had the ability to monitor info as it was broadcast from drones to handlers. They had a “virtual seat in the cockpit” as Israel’s drones struck their targets, reported The Intercept.

In 2008, a memo within the US National Security Agency bragged that “Project Anarchist” had been able to record video footage directly from the cockpit of an Israeli F-16 jet.

Project Anarchist began in 1998 and was centered near the highest point in Cyprus. The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper in Israel reported that a United States base in northern England was also involved in the operation. Israel was the project’s main focus, but systems in Turkey, Egypt, Syria, and Iran were also hacked.

The UK Foreign Office refused to comment on the story.
