A bloated tummy usually happens after consuming food and drinks which are hard to digest and which are gassy.

This can cause trapped or excess wind, which can lead to that uncomfortable bloated feeling.

Examples of gassy drinks include soft drinks and beer.

Examples of hard-to-digest foods include junk food and vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, sprouts and beans.

Follow these three diet tips to improve digestion and relieve a bloated tummy.

Feed the ‘friendly’ bacteria in your gut

Friendly bacteria help the process of digestion and boost immunity.

While friendly bacteria are found naturally in the gut, they need their own fuel source, which can be found in some foods.

Foods containing inulin, such as chicory, asparagus and leeks are good fuel sources.

Inulin is a type of dietary fibre which supports the growth of good bacteria.

Eat fermented foods

Fermented foods include kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir and miso.

While the thought of eating fermented foods may seem off-putting, they are natural sources of good bacteria.

Live yoghurt, which is fermented with friendly bacteria, is another good source.
