Every time there is a school or mass shooting anywhere in the United States, we hear the same old broken record from the mainstream media, Democrats and RINOs. Like an old scratched record, we hear, over and over, that America needs more gun control laws in fact, some have been playing a new record, calling for the banning of all firearms from private ownership.

There is one fatal flaw in their entire argument. Only law-abiding citizens obey gun control laws and yet the vast majority of gun violence is committed by criminals and gang members, who, by their very nature, don’t obey the laws. Even though most are banned from being in possession of a firearm, they still seem to get their hands-on firearms. Just do a daily search of the news and you’ll find a plethora of reports of felons being arrested for being in possession of firearms, making them and selling. Here is a link to such a daily list.

Democrats and RINOs have been pointing to other countries with strict gun control laws or gun bans. They often point to Australia, who enacted a gun ban over 30 years ago. It’s true that we don’t hear about mass shootings in Australia like we do hear in the United States, but the Democrats and RINOs fail to tell you what happened in the land down under after their gun ban took effect.

Since Australia banned semiautomatic rifles, shotguns and pump action shotguns the gun crime rates have skyrocketed throughout the country.

  • Murders committed with guns increased by 19%.
  • Home invasions increased by 21%.
  • Assaults committed with guns increased by 28%.
  • Armed robberies skyrocketed with an increase of 69%.

Many former gun owners blame the government and their gun control laws for the increases in crimes. They feel helpless in their own homes, unable to protect themselves. In fact, home invasions were so rare prior to the gun ban that in some areas, they did not even have a legal definition for what a home invasion was. They do now.

Democrats and RINOs also point to Great Britain, but then look at all of the shootings and terrorist attacks they’ve had in recent years. Friends of mine in England tell me that many British citizens have been calling for the government to give them back their guns. More British police are also wanting to be armed on the job.

Let’s look closer to home, say Mexico, our southern neighbor.

Mexico has very strict gun control laws. Check out some of these restrictions (there are more listed here):

  • All arms must be registered with the Secretariat of National Defense https://www.gob.mx/sedena in accordance with the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives.
  • The Directorate of Commercialization of Arms and Munitions (Dirección de Comercialización de Armamento y Municiones – DCAM) located in Mexico City is the only legally authorized firearms store in the country.
  • The Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), is responsible for issuing licenses and operating the General Directorate for the Federal Firearms Registry and Explosives Control.
  • Mexican citizens and legal foreign residents of Mexico may purchase firearms at DCAM provided they meet the qualifications.
  • Citizens may own a total of 10 registered firearms (nine long guns, one handgun) per household.
  • Businesses are not entitled to keep a firearm on the premises unless the business is also their residence.
  • Lost or stolen firearms must be reported to the Secretariat of Defense.
  • Owning a gun and carrying a firearm are two different scenarios in Mexico. You may own a registered firearm which must be kept in the home, but in order to carry it, you need a license, which is typically reserved for police, army, navy officials, some private security services and specialized sporting participants. Some rural landowners or politicians and affluent citizens, who feel they are in danger may be able to justify the need for a carry license.
  • Carry firearms licenses are issued to individuals who
  • are mentally and physically capable.
  • provide proof of employment.
  • served in the military.
  • do not have a criminal record.
  • do not use illegal drugs.
  • demonstrate a need to carry arms.

Another major gun restriction in Mexico is that there is only ONE legal gun store in the entire country of Mexico and that gun store is located behind a heavily fortified section of a heavily armed and protected military base. The store is run by the Directorate of Arms and Munitions Sales, a division of the army.

To enter the store, located on the outskirts of Mexico City, a person must undergo intensive background checks that takes months. They also have to have six different documents filled out and ready to go. Upon entering the store, everyone is frisked by armed military personnel.

If the argument used by America’s Democrats and RINOs accurate, one would think that Mexico has little if any gun violence. However, that’s not the case, according to the following report:

“Mexico ranks third worldwide in deaths by firearms, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) revealed.”

“According to the document, titled Global Mortality by Firearms 1990 – 2016, more than 250 thousand people died in 2016 from gun-related injuries, of which 15,400 were registered in Mexico. 2016 is the last year of finalized numbers worldwide to create the ranking, although Mexico saw an increase in violence in 2017.”

The facts speak for themselves. Nations like Australia, Great Britain and Mexico have proven that firearm bans and ultra-strict gun control laws don’t prevent crime and violence. It also proves that the real motive behind the anti-gun mantra that is plaguing our country has nothing to do with reducing violence and saving lives. If they wanted to do that, they would take a closer look at automobile accidents and tobacco, both which claim far more lives and injure far more people than guns do. What they want is to disarm the American people.
